Social Media Sabbitical

See ya Social Media!

Taking a break from social media is something I didn’t know I truly needed. I am definitely guilty of scrolling for what could be hours on Instagram, Tik-Tok, Pinterest and more. Especially recently as I am planning a wedding, I feel like I am constantly on Tik-Tok and Pinterest looking up ideas and sending them to my friends. I also just scroll for pure enjoyment. However, when I saw that giving up social media for a few days and blogging about it was an option for our last blog post, I knew I had to try it out.

I am not going to lie, I was nervous at first thinking there is no way I could last 48 hours without social media. I completed the social media hiatus Friday April 26th and Saturday April 27th. Here is a recap of how it went.

Friday

Friday was a little bit of an easier day. I started the social media break Friday morning. I usually start my morning by checking social media while I have a cup of coffee. Knowing I couldn’t check my social media, I decided to get up a little early and treat myself to Starbucks and head into work early. During the work day I don’t really check social media so those eight or so hours for me were easy. Once I was home from work I had dinner. After dinner is usually another time for me to scroll on social media for a while. However, instead I watched a movie with my mom and had a movie night with her. We made popcorn and had a great night together. It was very tempting to not scroll on social media before I went to bed, but instead I decided to start reading “The Locked Door” by Freida McFadden.

Saturday:

Saturdays are usually for getting the house in order and doing my grocery shopping. This helped take up a chunk of the day. I then worked on my project for class, read more of my book (which I couldn’t put down), made dinner, and had another night in with my parents as my Fiance is at home sick. My mom and I caught up on a few shows that we watched together. When it was time for bed I again chose to read my book instead of scrolling on social media. I ended up reading my book until almost midnight.

My Thoughts

At first, not being able to check social media made me a little anxious. I felt like I was missing something. I felt like I would miss what my friends and family  were up to for those few days. I also feel I use social media to help me unwind especially at night before I go to sleep. However, I LOVED reading the past few nights before I went to bed. I really enjoyed being able to disconnect and just enjoy something for me. I always say I wish I could read more. It takes me forever to finish a book because I feel I don’t have the time. But, I would love to keep this up where I disconnect at night and read.

I also feel like I was more present with my family. I cannot deny that when I normally sit down to watch a movie I am checking my phone several times. However, this weekend when watching a movie and different shows with my mom it was nice to fully present and spend that quality time with her. I do definitely think these few days have taught me to take a step back from social media. It made me realize I am on it way more than I need to be.

I would recommend to anyone that will listen, to give it a try! Try it out for a day, two, or even more! See how it makes you feel. You will definitely realize you have time to do the things you want to do.

Accessibility in the Classroom

What is Accessibility?  Accessibility is something that is available to help technology users use the technology more easily. This is not just something available for students. All sorts of technology has accessibility features. Even the Iphone you use has accessibility features. Simple things such as increasing your font size or what the side buttons on your phone do are accessibility features that you may not even realize you use.  Accessibility for Students Students need to have access to a variety of tools that will make them successful in the classroom. Majority of students today have a device they use daily. Within the device there are things called accessibility features that allow students to access technology conveniently. All technology has accessibility features, it is up to the user (or in education sometimes the teacher) to turn these features on.  Majority of my teaching career (in my old district) I used Apple products. My students had iPads and I ...

Digital Tattoos Part 2

Digital Tattoos Doing a data mine on myself is kind of nerve wracking for me. I was a little nervous to see what information was out there about myself. I am someone who keeps all their social media accounts private. At one point in my life, I didn’t have my last name on any of my social media accounts. When I first started teaching, I didn’t want it to be easy for my students or their families to find me on the internet. So now, I am very interested to see what is out there about me! When doing the data mine, I put my findings into a chart to show what was found on that site. Green represents that site had it and red means the site did not.  Source: Created by Blog Owner Google My first search was in a Safari browser using Google. I searched my name “Ashley Pesch”. Immediately pictures of myself popped up and I was nervous. However, I realized most of the pictures that popped were from my wedding website (which is public). Google was able to show my teacher Twitter/X account and t...

AI In Education

AI in Education  AI in education is becoming a bigger thing. AI is Artificial Intelligence. AI can complete human-like tasks, more so that are technology related. It is everywhere nowadays. Teachers are using AI to help support their lessons and students. However, there are so many different websites and tools that educators can use with AI that it can be overwhelming. I myself haven't used AI too much. I understand many things have AI built into it now. Such as Instagram with their “Meta AI”, but that’s about it. I would love to learn about more tools I can use in the classroom to support my planning and students' learning. With that being said, I took some time to explore three different AI tools for educators and I am going to share with you my thoughts! MagicSchool AI  Last school year, one of my colleagues presented on MagicSchool AI . She highlighted so many cool and fascinating things that it could do. I couldn’t wait to use it! I book marked the website right th...
